Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Lael Wilcox is an ultra-endurance cyclist whose journey began when commuting by bike in her 20s quickly evolved into riding across the country, and eventually around the world. Since entering ultra-distance racing in 2015, she has set numerous records, including women’s records in the Trans Am Bike Race, the Tour Divide ITT, and a Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation by standard bicycle in 2024, completing 18,125 miles in just over 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes. In 2026, she’s going after the men’s record: An astonishing 78.5 days! She has also achieved course records on the Baja Divide and notable finishes in international events such as Switzerland’s Navad 1000 and Iceland’s Westfjords Way Challenge.
Beyond competition, Lael is deeply committed to inspiring broader participation in cycling — particularly among women and girls. In 2017, she co-founded GRIT (Girls Riding Into Tomorrow) with Cait Rodriguez in Anchorage, Alaska. This free, six-week mentorship program pairs students with local mentors and rewards graduates with their own bicycles. In July 2024, Lael was appointed to the Adventure Cycling Association Board of Directors, where she contributes her extensive experience, passion, and steadfast commitment to expanding access to bike travel. Her achievements as an adventure cyclist, combined with her advocacy for cycling as a vehicle for exploration and empowerment, make her an invaluable member of the ACA leadership team.
Lael’s dedication to the sport, positive attitude, and authenticity have made her a highly respected figure in cycling, demonstrating perseverance and grit while encouraging others to confidently “Take the Lane” on and off the bike.
