Sue Cuevas was born and raised in Ohio. She majored in accounting at Youngstown State University (Ohio), and Grand Valley State University (Michigan) and also lived in Mexico while studying Christian Education and Finance.

She has over 35 years of financial expertise working in the banking and financial industry. She has taught numerous classes on financial literacy, with a passion to help people understand finances and make savvy decisions.

She also developed a bilingual educational program for first time homebuyers in Northwest Ohio. Realizing the need to help Latinos establish credit and build financial wealth she became the first Latina President/CEO and helped start the First Latino Credit Union (Nueva Esperanza Community Credit Union) in Toledo, Ohio. This is the first Latino chartered credit union in Ohio. She is a strong educational, positive, and operational executive with progressive experience including:

  • Growing the credit union from start-up zero to $4.1 Million
  • Obtaining the CDFI certification and the Minority Deposit Institution (MDI) designation
  • Receiving various CDFI TA grants along with the recent RRP Grant of $1.8 Million dollars to assist in serving the underserved market and help expand consumer lending, education and citizenship development to its Hispanic and immigrant communities.
  • Received the first and only Juntos Avanzamos designation for Nueva Esperanza in the state of Ohio. This is a designation for credit unions committed to serving and empowering Hispanic and immigrant consumers – helping them navigate the U.S. financial system and providing safe, affordable and relevant financial services.
  • Establishing a program called “lending with a heart”, which allows immigrants with no credit history to obtain a small dollar loan and establish credit with Nueva Esperanza.

Sue has been recognized numerous times in her community for her passion in helping the underserved and unbanked. In 2014, Sue received the “Latina Community Leader” award from Latina Style Magazine (Dallas, TX). In 2016/2017 she received first place in state and national categories for the Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award in the "People Helping People Award," which is given to credit unions that have made an impact in the community and for the extraordinary commitment in serving and growing the credit union’s product offerings, focusing on emphasis of financial empowerment and inclusion. In 2018 and 2019 Sue received the "Cesar Chavez" award for community service and also received the "Nuestra Familia" distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Award from the Ohio Governor Mike Dewine and the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission for her contribution in serving the Hispanic communities.

She is a member of the Northwest Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Latino Alliance of Northwest Ohio, and is involved in many local organizations. She is passionate about serving her community and finding ways to educate, elevate, and empower.
