Tonia Miller
Tonia Miller, an 18-year-old mother, was accused of the murder of her 11-week-old daughter, Alicia Duff, on October 19, 2001, in Battle Creek, Michigan. Her attorney did not present any expert testimony to refute the state’s finding of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Tonia was convicted of second-degree murder on April 14, 2003 and sentenced to between 20 and 30 years in prison. Tonia’s conviction was vacated in 2020, after four new experts concluded, unanimously, that Alicia had died from pneumonia. Tonia remained in prison while the state appealed the decision and was released on bond on April 22, 2021. The prosecutors dismissed the charge on August 30, 2021.
