India Spellman is the first woman to be exonerated in Philadelphia in more than a generation. She was just 17 years old and a breakout high school basketball star when she was falsely accused and wrongfully convicted of a robbery and murder. Her wrongful conviction was the result of police coercion and misconduct, ineffective assistance of trial counsel, eyewitness misidentification, and fabricated testimony. She was exonerated in February 2023 after serving more than a decade in prison. She currently serves as an advisor to the Philadelphia Justice Project for Women & Girls.
