Morkea Spellman
Speaker Bio

Morkea Spellman became a tireless advocate for the wrongfully convicted on August 20, 2010—the day her teenage daughter, India Spellman, was arrested for crimes she did not commit. Homicide detectives illegally prevented her from being present during their interrogation of 17-year-old India. They falsely claimed her daughter had confessed and demanded that she sign paperwork that later turned out to be a juvenile waiver of Miranda. She refused. Ms. Spellman’s refusal became the bedrock for successfully overturning India’s wrongful conviction. She has since expanded her advocacy to other cases and currently serves as a member of the Executive Board of the Philadelphia Justice Project for Women & Girls.
