Defeat from the Jaws of Victory: When Agreed-Upon Cases Go Haywire
Description

When a prosecutor agrees that an individual has been wrongly convicted, we hope the judiciary and other actors take action to reverse that conviction as quickly as possible. But there has been a trend nationally of cases not going as expected. Conviction Integrity Units (CIUs) and innocence organizations have seen judges reject agreed-upon resolutions. Third parties – victims' representatives or other law enforcement officials – have sought to intervene. Even politics has played a role in preventing an exoneration. This panel will explore each of those situations with people who have experienced it. In so doing, the panel hopes to give others ways to think about their cases differently to get the best possible outcome as quickly as possible.
