Name
Wrongful Convictions and True Crime Media: Navigating the Infotainment Space
Description

In recent years, true crime infotainment has surged in popularity. While some creators uphold ethical storytelling and journalistic integrity by consulting with the story's subjects during production and use their platform for advocacy, others churn out content quickly and cheaply, prioritizing ratings and profit. In this session, exoneree, producer, and journalist Amanda Knox will speak with Great North Innocence Project communications and outreach director Hayley Poxleitner about the opportunities, limitations, and red flags of storytelling within the true crime space. The session will cover questions like how to balance a desire for increased visibility of the innocence movement with the problematic practices of infotainment media, how to advocate for compensation for freed or exonerated people, how to retain narrative influence over the final product, what are the potential legal implications of participating in true crime, and more.
