Alan is responsible for the management of HOPE's Fiscal, Data Analytics, Compliance, Project Management and Information Technology functions, and has been with the company since 1994 when he joined HOPE as its second employee. Alan has more than 35 years of experience in small business lending and community development finance. Before joining HOPE, Alan worked as a commercial banker at Signet Bank, serving small and medium-sized businesses; a consultant to the micro-lending program at the North Carolina Rural Center; and a research associate at Harvard Business School. In addition to an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill and a PhD from Jackson State University, he has completed the Southeastern School of Advanced Commercial Lending, the Venture Capital Institute, as well as additional coursework from the Commercial Finance Association, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Business School. From 2017-2022, Alan served as an adjunct professor in the Public Policy and Administration PhD program at Jackson State University.
Alan serves on the Board, the Loan Committee, and the NMTC Community Advisory Committee for Primary Care Development Corporation; the NMTC Community Advisory Committee for Mid-Cities CDE; the Loan Committee for Appalachian Capital Corporation; the Program Action Review Committee and Rural Advisory Committee for LISC; and the Board of the Mississippi Urban League. He has served as Board Treasurer of the Opportunity Finance Network, and Committee member for projects such as the U.S. Financial Diaries, Harvard Joint Center on Housing Studies Research Symposium, and Expanding Black Business Capital Initiative design team.
