Today’s Technology, Tomorrow’s Exonerations: How New Technology Can Entrench and Amplify Racial Bias in Policing
Description

From facial recognition technology, gunshot detection systems, and automated license plate readers, to predictive algorithms for targeted crime control, new technologies are becoming central to modern-day policing. These technologies have the potential to entrench racial bias that has always existed in American policing practices. They also have the ability to drive the wrongful convictions of the future, bringing innocent people who would not otherwise be in contact with police into a surveillance net. This panel will discuss the perils of new technology, in particular threats to Black and brown communities, and the litigation, policy, and community activism that work to address these perils.
