A number of factors affect the experience of BIPOC youth with the criminal legal system. These range from experiences of disparate school discipline and pushout to encounters with the foster and juvenile court system. At the same time, the perceptions of police, jurors, and other system actors can be influenced by implicit and explicit biases that result in Black children being perceived as older, more culpable, and more dangerous. Panelists will discuss these issues, how they affect wrongful convictions, and litigation, legislative, and policy approaches to prevent the wrongful conviction of youth of color.
