The Network has seen growing interest in abolition and momentum toward discussing whether and how our work can contribute to dismantling the harms of the criminal legal system. This session includes both 1) a panel that explores the intersection of innocence work and abolition, and 2) an interactive workshop aimed at envisioning how innocence organizations can put abolition into practice. How does abolition inform community support, communications, policy priorities, and litigation strategy? How does our work interact with the goals of abolition, and what are the tensions between innocence frameworks and abolition? How can an abolition framework push us to think more creatively and expansively about innocence work? The panel and workshop will bring together people with varying experiences in abolitionist work to discuss and facilitate conversations about the innocence movement's relationship to abolition, how abolitionist tenets influence our work, and what challenges we face.
