Healing After Injustice: Therapeutic Approaches for the Freed and Exonerated
Description

Re-entry teams working with the freed/exonerated community must navigate the complex emotional landscape their clients face, which includes trauma, stigma, grief, and reintegration into society. Consequently, there are unique therapeutic challenges and considerations involved in providing support to these individuals. This session will highlight the psychological impacts of wrongful conviction and incarceration, offer insights into the specific therapeutic needs of the freed and exonerated community, including trauma-informed care and resilience-building strategies, and provide practical tools and therapeutic approaches tailored to address the multifaceted challenges clients face when navigating life after wrongful conviction. Participants will hear an exoneree share his personal experience in therapy and engage in collective brainstorming around how to best meet the needs of this community, independently and in partnership with organizations.
