Name
Art and Activism: Building Community, Organizing Support
Description

This roundtable will explore how artmaking and cultural organizing can be powerful forms of self-expression and truth-telling for people who are incarcerated. Presenters will share their lived experiences as formerly incarcerated artists, legal advocates, and educators who teach inside prisons, focusing on projects and campaigns they have worked on. Presenters will discuss the following: 1) how artmaking can be a visual form of storytelling that disrupts dominant narratives about incarcerated people; 2) the role of art in activist campaigns around specific cases, as well as those pursuing more collective demands; 3) how collective artmaking can be a form of freedom building; and 4) the challenges of making art under conditions of confinement.
