When the Crime is Survival: Fighting the Criminalization of Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence
Description

Historically, the legal system has failed to appropriately handle the role of intimate partner violence in assessing criminal culpability. This panel will highlight the work of organizations inside and outside of the innocence movement that bring current societal and scientific understandings of the impact of intimate partner violence to bear in litigation and advocacy for people convicted of killing their abusers or committing crimes under the influence of their abusers. Panelists will offer a view of these cases as an expansion of our traditional understanding of "innocence," and discuss ways to integrate science, narrative, and specialized fact investigation into trial, post-conviction litigation, clemency proceedings and policy recommendations.
