Fresh Ideas for Stale Results: Advancements in DNA Testing Technology and Options for Additional Testing in Old Cases
Description

This session is designed to give innocence practitioners new ideas for DNA testing avenues in cases where testing options are thought to be exhausted. Jason Chute of RTI International will provide a global understanding of the evolving landscape of forensic DNA collection and testing over the past decade. Cynthia Garza of the Dallas County Conviction Integrity Unit will present the exoneration of Martin Santillan, whose case involved multiple rounds of DNA testing between 1998 and 2021. Karen Friedman of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) will present the details of the Postconviction Testing of DNA Evidence grant program and highlights from successful and interesting grantee projects. The session will be moderated by Adina M. Thompson, Ph.D., of the Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice at UPenn Carey School of Law.
