Justice for All: Transforming Historical Trauma Habits of Institutions and Systems
Description

As advocates in the innocence movement, we operate under the premise of "justice for all," but what does this ideal mean in practice? In this session, hosted by the Innocence Network Executive Board’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, Calvin Terrell will explore how the promise of justice is often undermined by systemic biases, power imbalances, and entrenched practices within the criminal legal system. Building on the principles of the DEI Committee's cultural humility guide, this panel will address the historical traumas that shape these systems and the organizational culture shifts needed to move closer to a genuine realization of "justice for all." Attendees will gain practical tools for applying cultural humility, reframing perspectives, and using emotional intelligence to navigate complex dynamics. Panelists will share strategies for disrupting inequitable structures and fostering inclusive, restorative practices within organizations.
