Since 2023, the Illinois Innocence Project has trained over 4,000 recruit police officers at all certified academies in the state of Illinois. Each training is facilitated by a team made up of an innocence attorney, a retired police officer, and exonerees from a speakers' bureau comprising 23 exonerees from across the country. Overwhelmingly, the recruits report that the most significant piece of the course is hearing from exonerees, who share personal stories of wrongful conviction and the common contributing factors which led to those convictions. In this powerful presentation, attendees will hear from members of this training team, including four exonerees who will share their experiences of presenting at the academies and how this collaboration has not only changed the lives of the officers they speak to, but their own lives as well.
